A Coming-Of-Middle-Age Comedy-Drama
Two Unlikely Companions. Trapped in a Basement. Catastrophe or Epiphany?
A coming-of-middle-age comedy-drama, Spanish Steps traps Barry and Maureen in close quarters with nowhere to hide from each other — or themselves. As tempers flare and buttons are pushed, they become mirrors to one another’s blind spots in a sharp satire about the roles we play in society. Funny, uncomfortable, and unexpectedly moving, this award-winning play balances biting humour with genuine heart. Between the laughter you may find you shed a tear in hope of a real human connection.

WGSA Award Winner For Best Produced Script (2025)

Written by: Garvin Werner (WGSA Award Winner, 2025)
Directed by: Caroline Midgely
Cast: Dianne Simpson & Garvin Werner

“Layering humour with deep emotion, there are laugh-out-loud moments and moments of raw vulnerability and audience discomfort, all held together by the superb acting of Gavin Werner and Dianne Simpson. “ - Sam Nupen

“This relatable struggle unfolds like a therapy session witnessed through laughter and tears. ” - Georg Knoke

"Werner is notably unafraid of asking (via his characters) brutally difficult questions or stating perspectives that go directly against the societal grain...”- Bruce Dennill

The apocalypse will not be free.

A killer virus is destroying all the trees, the end of the world is near. A group of scientists and engineers have been brought together by a billionaire to try and find a cure. But what if saving the world doesn’t offer the best ROI. Making Wine in Scotland is an adventure, love story about a special tree, chess, bad jokes, the end of the world, the Milky Way, movies, grenades, very big doors, freshly cut nails, billionaires, corporate conspiracies and just a smidgen of hope.

Making Wine In Scotland is a dystopian, love story that explores how capitalism and climate change are inextricably linked. It’s a funny, sad, express train adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat and challenge how you understand the world.

The play premiered at the 2024 National Arts Festival and was an instant hit.

Ter describes the play as, “Two ordinary people’s fight against a system that is set up to make them fail. How do you fight the Titans and what difference can one person make?

“Ter Hollman's post-apocalyptic three-man show is by turns darkly comic, bitingly satirical, romantic, hopeful, and despairing. Making Wine in Scotland is a word-of-mouth hit on the fringe at the #NAF24 this year. See it if you can. It might just change your life.” - Fiona Snyckers

“Making Wine in Scotland effectively questions the extent to which the rich are willing to go in their quest for wealth, often done at the expense of the underprivileged and the planet itself. The play provides a provocative narrative combining humour and critique of society. It urges its viewers to reflect on the impact of capitalism on society.” Cue Magazine
