Our annual birthday party is a little late - But it gives us an excuse and time to really make sure its a big and original (and safe) celebration.
Every year, in celebration of our birthday, we re-create the same event that started us off all this years ago: 24 Hours in the City. For 24 Hours in the City, we get a number of awesome creatives together to bring our audiences a few brand new short theatre pieces that are created and produced over 24 Hours and then staged at The Market Theatre Lab.
This time, not only because its our 10th ANNUAL EVENT, but because of - you know- that other thing, we are doing things a little differently! We are going daytime, outdoors and super socially distanced with
POP in the Park! We'll be getting 30 creatives together at 3pm on a Saturday and will collectively create something (in 6 different teams) to be staged and experienced in a public space by 3pm on Sunday.
The public space is the park (Delta Park).
Join us there for a super fun, family-friendly play in the park!
The proceeds go toward bursaries for Students at the Market Theatre Lab.
Bring kids, puppies and a picnic blanket and join us on Sunday 28 March at 3pm to revel in the joy of brand new creations and community. We would love to see you there. Location will be confirmed on bookings.
"Tickets" can be purchased on our site for R 100, or you can choose to make a donation in any amount via our site. There will also be snap scan and payfast facilities for donations at the venue too. Please note, 'tickets' are a donation toward bursaries at the Market Theatre Lab. We will be popping up in public space - and there will be no restrictions on entry. We will, however, send bookings a whats app link and location pin to help find us on the day.
We are also extremely excited that this event will be our first ever collaboration with the brand new JSMMT (Johannesburg School of Mask and Movement Theatre)! JSMMT is the first school of its kind in South Africa, offering a purely movement-based and practical approach to theatre training. At the core of JSMMT’s philosophy is the actor as creator. Learning how to create one’s own work through provocations is what we strive for. The school provides its students with a variety of tools, aiming to develop and hone their unique artistic and poetic voice.
Spearheaded by South African theatre practitioners Daniel Buckland, Mlindeli Zondi, Kyla Davis, and Roberto Pombo, SASMMT is based on the pedagogy of movement theatre developed by Jaques Lecoq. Through rigorous practice and serious play, the school's vision is to create a generation of insightful practitioners who create thought provoking and quality theatre.
