Public showing of the work in progress on Saturday, 21st of February, 15h
Joy and Joyce are related. Ingrid and Joyce are not. But they are connected:
By their approach to life with joy as a principle of mastering it. By knowing challenging times and how to overcome them. By having two younger relatives who believe it’s a fabulous idea to begin an artistic journey together and share their inspirational energy.
So we connect and document their life stories, which took place on different continents and under different circumstances, but yet tell similar stories of courage and fate. Ingrid survived bombardments, Joyce survived/s Apartheid and racism. Their lives appear to not having been easy, yet their positivity is unbroken. How do they keep it alive? Let’s find out.
In its core, Life of Joy is about choices and about chances in life. It is an inter-generational project, where their knowledge is guarded by storytelling. Where are parallels in their biographies when it comes to being raised? A certain social understanding of their time how „girls“ or „women“ should be, how this affected their life in work, family, and raising children of their own?
Through documentary means, storytelling, and reflections on female perspectives we create an archive of joy, a pool of knowledge outside of history books, as long as we can still do it together. And prepare ourselves to not only talk about joy, but also about loss.
