Join in for an online conversation on Independent Theatre producing and mapping independent theatre spaces with POPArt co-founder, Hayleigh Evans. 

Hayleigh Evans is an art-trepeneur : actor, theatre maker, arts administrator, teacher / facilitator, business owner - wearer of many hats, but above all a story teller.  In 2011, she co-founded POPArt Studios, where she remains the artistic director for the theatre.

She holds a BA Hon in Performing Arts (obtained from AFDA in 2007) and has enjoyed a diverse career in the live and filmed arts, playing many roles from performer to production administrator to facilitator. Through POPArt, she has forged strong partnerships with renowned institutions including the The Market Theatre Laboratory and Centre for the Less Good Idea. Through her work in a range of spheres, she has built a solid reputation for supporting cultural production across a range of disciplines in Johannesburg.

Hayleigh was named as a Cosmpolitan Fun Fearless Female in 2014, as well as listed on the Mail and Guardian Top 200 Young South Africans in 2015. POPArt has received numerous awards for their contribution to the theatre industry - including the Arts and Culture Trust ImpACT award in 2015 and the Naledi Theatre Awards Executive Directors Award in 2017.

As we move toward developing shape and style, join us for an evening with Daniel Buckland from 5pm - 7pm at POPArt.  

Daniel is a Johannesburg-based performer, director, educator and theatre-maker. In his own word, his career has seen me work both locally and abroad for over ten years. One of my career highlights was performing in ​Cirque du Soleil's 'Saltimbanco' and 'Love'. I am a Co-Artistic Director of Dark Laugh Theatre Company who's production of 'The Butcher Brothers', directed by Sylvaine Strike, was awarded the 2011 Naledi Award for Best Cutting Edge Production and a Standard Bank Ovation Award. In 2014, I again collaborated with Strike in the production of the Standard Bank Ovation Award winning one man show ‘The God Complex.’ I most recently worked for the Motion Capture animation studio Flying Circus where I co-wrote, directed and acted in the 26 part animated comedy series “Silly Seasons” and the animated action adventure comedy; “Inside Job”. ​ Most recently, I have been collaborating with ​The Cirk, creating and directing their recent performance of 'Urban Circus' which was see at the National Ars Festival in 2022."

Join us for a 3 hour class with legendary director, choreographer and Vuka Actor Ambassador - SNEJA!

Sinenhlanhla Mgeyi is a theatre maker, director, dancer, choreographer and an actor who graduated from the Market Theatre Laboratory in 2017.

He began his performance training under the guidance of Howard ‘Brother’ Dladla at the Zase Laduma Art Centre in Mpumalanga. Following working at community art centres around the country, he joined the Market Theatre Laboratory.

Following his graduation from the Market Lab, he toured to the United Kingdom where he took part in a collaborative co-production “Encountering the Other” under the guidance of Clara Vaughan and Jaques de Silva. He then joined the Kwasha! Theatre Company, where he has been part of major productions such as “Error SA Comedy” (dir. Christopher D. Betts) and “The Little Prince” (dir. Mwenya Kabwe and Clara Vaughan). His currently a trainer at the Market Theatre Laboratory.

Join us for a 4 hour session on directing and shaping work with Ilana Cilliers-Dlangalala 

Ilana Dlangalala-Cilliers is a multi-award winning theatre maker, actor and educator, and a founding member of the experimental, experiential production company, Mount Maak. She started her career at Ubom! Eastern Cape Drama Company, a company which used to create through a devised process, and tour about four to five new works yearly, as well as facilitate workshops in music, theatre making and group dynamics. She is currently a full-time lecturer at the Open Window Institute, where she lectures in Screen Acting, while continuing to direct and devise theatre pieces.
